Gas Methane

The main component of natural gas is methane, a hydrocarbon composed of one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms, its chemical formula is CH4, and under natural conditions it is in gaseous form.

Natural gas contains, in addition to methane, ethane, propane and higher hydrocarbons. In its natural state methane is odorless, colorless and tasteless. It must be “odorized” to be deployed in home networks; this procedure is adopted to make the alert the presence and lower the hazard.

There are only deposits of methane, but in general, this gas is also present in the upper part of the oil deposits in amounts almost equal to that of the oil itself. To carry away the surface of large quantities of gas it needs to use gas pipelines made of steel tubes with a diameter between 30 and 140 cm.
